Is a mandatory educational prerequisite for all state-licensed Mortgage Loan Originators (MLOs) to function in the mortgage industry. This regulatory training was implemented following the enactment of the Secure and Fair Enforcement for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 (SAFE Act). To fulfill this mandate, state-licensed MLOs are required to undertake 20 hours of education approved by the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS), which is the official record system used by all state agencies. The Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) has the same basic requirements to become a mortgage loan originator in all 50 states and U.S. territories. This entails a 20-Hour NMLS-Approved Mortgage Loan Originator Pre-Licensing (PE) course. Some states have additional educational requirements, but most of the education is finished when the 20-Hour Mortgage Loan Originator course is complete. To meet the requirements, aspiring MLOs must complete a 20-hour NMLS-approved Mortgage Loan Originator pre-licensing (PE) course.
